Hailing from the beautiful region of Belgium, I, the Duchesse de Bourgogne Flanders Red Ale, am the product of centuries of brewing tradition, a true embodiment of the rich history of Belgian brewing.
My story begins with Mary of Burgundy, a duchess born in Brussels in the 15th century. She is depicted on my bottle labels and till this day, is still held in high regard at the town of Vichte, where my brewers, Karl and Peter Verhaeghe, operate their family brewery. Mary granted many rights to citizens and supported the brewers, which has helped to establish the brewing traditions that I represent.
My brewers have been brewing the Flemish red-brown beer for four generations, and it is me that has become their flagship beer. As a Flanders red ale-style beer, I am characterized by my sour and fruity notes, reminiscent of the finest lambic beers. My brewing process is meticulous, involving primary and secondary fermentation, followed by an 18-month maturation in oak barrels. The tannins from the oak lend me my fresh and fruity character, while the sourness is tempered by the sweet character of the malt. Additionally, I'm brewed with deeply roasted malts and aged hops, so I am low in bitterness, allowing my rich and complex flavours to shine.
So, my dear friends, as you savor my exquisite taste, allow me to transport you to a world of sophistication and refinement, where the traditions of Belgian brewing are revered and celebrated. Cheers to a timeless classic that is fit for royalty!

Verhaeghe Brewery is a family-owned Belgian brewery located in Vichte, West Flanders. The brewery was founded in 1885 by Paul Verhaeghe and continues to be run by the 4th generation of Verhaeghes today. Despite multiple setbacks wrought by the world wars, Verhaeghe managed to pick up the pieces and re-establish itself on the market. Verhaeghe Brewery’s greatest success is the Duchesse de Bourgogne - a Flemish Red Ale that was named in honour of Duchess Mary of Burgundy, the only daughter of Charles the Bold. Today, the brewery continues to thrive in spite of Karl’s horrific traffic accident as well as the declining demand for Flemish Red-Brown ales.
