A curious twist of fate! I, a humble brew born in the heart of Belgium, find myself reborn anew in the bustling streets of Tokyo. They call me St. Bernardus Tokyo, a name that may sound familiar. Years ago, in 2012, I graced the opening of a fine St. Bernardus cafe here, but this time, I arrive with a brand new recipe, a delightful surprise even for myself!
Imagine a golden wheat ale, unfiltered and pure, just like the spring waters that nourish our abbey back home. Atop my head sits a crown of impressive white foam, a testament to the care and craftsmanship that birthed me. Take a sip and a wave of citrus washes over you, followed by the gentle fragrance of chamomile fields. Hints of banana and red apple peek through, a touch of sweetness from the yeast that sings within me. The keen palate might even find whispers of clove and vanilla, a nod to the exotic spices that grace the markets of this faraway land.
Mind you, I was made for adventurous souls... So kampai! Let's embark on this journey together!
The history of St. Bernardus, a former Trappist brewery, can be traced back to the early 1900s, when the Trappists fled to Watou, Belgium and started making cheese as a source of income. In 1930, the abbey was taken over by Evariste Deconinck, who later reached a 30-year agreement with a neighbouring abbey - the Sint-Sixtus Westvleteren - to brew and market his Trappist beers under licence. It was only in 1992 that the brewery started producing its beers under the St. Bernardus label that we know today, which features the iconic smiling monk holding a glass. Throughout its history, the brewery has been producing authentic and high-quality Belgian beers that are highly-respected by beer lovers and have gone on to win multiple awards over the years!
