Rogue is not afraid to dream big and take risks for the sake of creating world class beers. The brewery believes in doing everything by hand; it brews its own beer, distils its own spirits, farms its own ingredients, and coppers its own barrels. Founded in 1988 as a brewpub, Rogue started to craft beers that stand out from the crowd, are uncompromised in quality, and perfect when paired with food.

Rogue Ales & Spirits, commonly referred to as Rogue Brewing, is a craft brewery and distillery based in Newport, Oregon. Founded in 1988 by Jack Joyce, Bob Woodell, Rob Strasser, and Jeff Schultz, it has since become the face of Oregon’s booming beer industry.

Rogue Brewing's history is rooted in the Pacific Northwest, a region known for its independent spirit and love of good beer. Jack Joyce, a former Nike executive, returned to his hometown of Ashland, Oregon, in the mid-1980s and discovered a love for homebrewing. He soon joined forces with former Nike executives Bob Woodell and Rob Strasser, and together they launched a new venture in craft brewing.

Why Newport, Oregon?

When Joyce was looking for a location for a second brewpub, he found himself stuck in a snowstorm in Newport, Oregon. Perhaps it was fate that brought Joyce and Mohava Niemi, aka “Mo”, together, but when Mo told Joyce about her dream of living above a bar, Joyce knew that he had found the perfect location.

The two discussed the terms of rent over a heartwarming bowl of Mo’s famous clam chowder whilst the snowstorm was still raging outside. Mo made her terms very clear: Rogue has to promise to “feed the fishermen” as a way of giving back to the community as most of Newport’s residents are fishermen. As a result, the brewery committed to feeding the fishermen 3 decades ago and continues to give back today via donations and partnerships - like the one with Dreamland Skateparks.

After Joyce agreed to these terms, the location was his! This supposed “secondary” brewpub at Newport later became Rogue’s main location as the first brewpub was forced to close due to flooding.

Rogue gone rogue: experimenting outside of beer

Besides being known for its hard work and authenticity, Rogue has also gained a reputation for innovation and creativity in brewing. The brewery has experimented with a wide variety of beer styles, from classic European brews to bold and experimental concoctions. Some of their most popular beers include Dead Guy Ale, Hazelnut Brown Nectar, and Shakespeare Stout.

In addition to brewing beer, Rogue has also made a name for itself in the spirits industry. They began distilling their own spirits in 2003, with a focus on using local ingredients and innovative techniques. Today, Rogue produces a wide range of spirits, including gin, whiskey, and rum!

Rogue doesn’t just break norms, it gives back!

Throughout its history, Rogue has shown its dedication to community involvement. Through the Rogue Foundation, the brewery provides support to various organisations that support environmental and social causes, such as the American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and the Special Olympics.

In 2022, Rogue donated a portion of their proceeds from Beachy Clean IPA and Bayfront Vodka to SOLVE Oregon - an environmental non-profit organisation. The brewery also raised over $15K for Ukrainian relief through the release of F*#K Putin beer and merch!

Rogue Brewing's commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability has earned them numerous awards and accolades over the years. They have been recognized for their brewing and distilling prowess by the World Beer Cup, the Great American Beer Festival, and the American Distilling Institute, among others.

Over the past three decades, Rogue has grown from a brewery to a globally recognized and well-loved brand. Rogue products are now available in all 50 states and more than 50 countries, and we look forward to seeing Rogue’s continued growth!
