let's tap into their story!

Rodenbach is an iconic Belgian brewery founded by a legendary and dedicated family over almost 200 years ago in 1821. It started with Pedro Rodenbach and his entrepreneurial wife Regina Wauters. In 1864, their son, Edward, took over the reins and started to expand the brewery. However, it was not until Edward’s son, Eugène, that the brewery started to produce high-quality unique beers with such masterful characters.

Eugène not only studied the vinification of beer, but also optimised the maturing process in oak foeders - also known as maturing barrels. After Eugène passed in 1889, the brewery was entrusted to his daughters and granddaughters, and was later acquired by Palm Belgian Craft Brewers in 1989.

Rodenbach’s world-renowned foeder halls had a grand total of 294 oak foeders, some of which are 150 years old. In order to preserve the rich traditions and history of Rodenbach, the oak foeders and the halls have all been declared industrial heritage of the Flemish community. In addition, a museum about the history of the Rodenbach family and its beers was officially inaugurated on 23 June 2000.

Rodenbach’s beers

Rodenbach Brewery is known for its distinctive sour beers, including the Rodenbach Grand Cru, which is arguably the brewery’s most popular beer. The Grand Cru has a complex fruitiness and refined sweet-sour flavour that is produced by a two-stage fermentation with lactic acid bacteria, a combination of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 beer as well as a two-year-long barrel oak-ageing process. The result is an amazing beer with a multi-layered texture and a rich flavour consisting of fruit, wood, and esters.
Another famous sour of Rodenbach is the Rodenbach Classic Flanders Red Ale - a perfectly balanced blend of young and matured beer that has flavours of roasted malts, tart fruit, and subtle oak undertones. The matured beer used was aged for 2 years in the oak foeders, which gives the ale a unique sweet-sour flavour complemented by a complex fruitiness that only the best wines produce!

When you think of sour beers, no doubt Rodenbach will come to mind; the brewery has truly managed to make a name for itself, from being highly regarded by beer enthusiasts to winning numerous awards for its top-quality and delightfully flavourful beers. Though the brewery had been acquired by Palm, which was in turn acquired by Swinkels Family Brewers in 2016, Rodenbach continues to focus on producing consistently delicious beers that beer lovers all around the world can enjoy!
