let's tap into their story!

In a humble kitchen just outside the Northern California hamlet of Lagunitas, Tony Magee was crafting beers with an equally humble homebrew kit. Magee may have botched his first homebrew attempt, but that didn’t stop his newfound hobby from taking off. After a ruined Thanksgiving dinner, Magee rented a room behind the old House of Richards in Forest Knolls for his homebrewing activities and started slinging beers to local watering holes.
Lagunitas - Our Story
In 1993, Lagunitas Brewing Co was born. The brewery quickly gained a reputation for making deliciously hoppy IPAs that stood out from the sea of pale ales in Bay Area bars back then. Soon after, the Lagunitas outgrew its home in Forest Knolls and Magee decided to move to a larger location in Petaluma. The move was huge for Lagunitas, as it allowed the brewery to increase production and expand its variety of brews.

Lagunitas’ encounter with weed

Fast forward to 2005, where the brewery was temporarily shut down because of weed. That’s right, Lagunitas’ employees were investigated for dealing marijuana, but no one was charged for selling to undercover officers as they were all willing to give it away for free!

It all started when the Lagunitas Brewing team started throwing parties every Thursday to put a beer (and a lil’ something else) in every partygoers’ hands. They simply wanted to have fun parties, not indulge in criminal activities, but the Alcoholic Beverage Control thought otherwise. Instead of letting this “unfortunate” event affect them, the Lagunitas Brewing team created a new beer to commemorate: Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale.
Completely unfazed by their encounter with the police in 2005, Lagunitas continued experimenting with weed and created a cannabis-terpene beer - the Lagunitas Hi-Fi Sessions. These cannabis-infused sparkling beverages are zero-calories, zero-carbs, zero-sugar, and non-alcoholic!

Lagunitas today

In 2015, Lagunitas announced that it had sold a 50% stake in the company to Heineken International. The move was controversial among craft beer enthusiasts, who were concerned that Lagunitas would lose its independence and become just another mass-produced beer.

However, Magee remained at the helm of Lagunitas and continued to oversee the brewery's operations. Heineken's investment allowed Lagunitas to expand its distribution and reach a wider audience, while still maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation.
