Kaiju (怪獣)" translates to "strange beast" in Japanese – evoking iconic monsters like Godzilla, King Kong, and the towering foes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In 2013, three nerdy Australian beer scientists brought Kaiju! Beer to life, crafting a tribe of monstrously flavorful brews. Each creation is unapologetically intense, wildly unique, and irresistibly good – perfect for those who dare to embrace the extraordinary.
Kaiju, the brewery, takes inspiration from the legendary beasts of Japanese kaiju films to create intensely flavorful “monsters” of its own – its bold and delicious brews. Founded in 2013 by Nat, his brother Callum, and Callum’s wife, the brewery began as a gypsy brewing operation under the name Monster Mash, crafting small-batch beers using borrowed facilities.
However, when a certain energy drink company objected the name, the trio rebranded as Kaiju, fully embracing their love for kaiju culture. This pivotal change brought focus not only to their craft but also to their unique identity, one that would soon set them apart.

Kaiju’s Unique “Can-vas”
Kaiju’s beers are as famous for their labels as for their flavors. Designed by New York-based artist Mikey Burton, the cans depict quirky, colorful monsters and heroic figures inspired by kaiju films. These eye-catching designs have become synonymous with the brewery, ensuring that Kaiju stands out in a crowded craft beer market.
Callum knew that to compete with other breweries creating intensely hoppy beers, Kaiju needed more than just great flavor—it needed an unforgettable identity. The result? A brand that turns heads on shelves and keeps fans coming back for more.
Deliciously Terrifying Brews
Kaiju’s beers may lure customers with their bold packaging, but their unforgettable flavors seal the deal. The Krush Tropical Pale Ale, Kaiju’s star brew, features a clean malt profile and intense tropical fruit notes, making it a fan favorite and responsible for more than half of the brewery’s sales in 2020.
Other offerings include the refreshing Golden Axe Apple Cider, with its fresh-cut apple aroma and balanced sweetness, and the legendary Aftermath Double IPA, Kaiju’s first-ever brew. Packed with pine, citrus, and caramelized orange flavors, Aftermath made such an impact that it caused a statewide shortage of Simcoe hops upon release.
Brewing Monsters of Flavor
Kaiju has established itself as a brewery where bold design meets bold flavor. From its humble beginnings as a gypsy brewer to its rise as a cult favorite, Kaiju’s “monsters” have proven that creativity and craftsmanship are a recipe for success.
