Most breweries are born from a single, fiery passion for beer. But Holgate's story is unique, rooted in a love story as much as a love for the craft. Paul and Tash Holgate, two science students, met in a chemistry lab and soon found themselves bound not only by academic pursuits but also by a shared love for the art of brewing.

From Lab Partners to Brewmasters

After tying the knot, Paul's curiosity led him to the world of homebrewing. His love for creation found a perfect outlet in crafting his own beers. As his brewing skills grew, so did a dream – to establish a brewery of his own.

Inspiration struck during a U.S. holiday in 1997. Witnessing the dedication of small-scale brewers, who prioritized quality over profit, ignited a fire within Paul. He envisioned a brewery that would not only produce exceptional beer but also create a welcoming space for beer lovers.

A Brewhouse Born

In 1999, the dream became a reality. Holgate Brewhouse opened its doors, combining a brewery, a public bar, a restaurant, and a hotel under one roof. This innovative concept quickly made it a popular destination for beer tourists, offering a unique experience of seeing the brewing process firsthand.

However, the early days were far from easy. With Paul and Tash shouldering the entire operation, from brewing to administration, the workload was immense. Even bottling their beers required the help of their entire family. Despite the challenges, Paul's unwavering dedication to his craft drove him to source his own grain and mill it by hand.

A Legacy of Quality

Today, Holgate boasts a skilled team of brewers and a dedicated sales force. The 2002 installation of their first brewhouse significantly increased production capacity. Further expansion led to the construction of a state-of-the-art Braukon Brewhouse, solidifying Holgate's position as a leading craft brewery.

From humble beginnings to a thriving business, Holgate's story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and a shared love for great beer.
