Deschutes Brewery started as a small brewpub in downtown Bend, Oregon, 1988. Its founder, Gary Fish, named it after the iconic waterway flowing through town - the Deschutes River (pronounced da shootz). Gary Fish had a vision; he wanted to bring people together with good beer. As a result, he founded The Deschutes Brewery & Public House - a comfy home for friends, family, and even strangers to gather over yummy food and tasty beers.

If you think that this award-winning, overwhelmingly successful brewery always had fame and wealth from the start, think again. Deschutes started small; it only sold 310 barrels of beers in its first year, as compared to the rough estimate of about 225,000 barrels it currently sells each year!

The humble brewery truly spread its wings and expanded beyond its original pub with a brewery less than a mile across town, and a second pub in downtown Portland. Today, Deschutes Brewing is one of the leading craft breweries in the United States that is 100% family and employee-owned.

Deschutes’ signature brews

In the early years, Deschutes Brewery continued to experiment and innovate, producing a variety of unique and flavorful beers. Black Butte Porter, Deschutes’ first beer with a creamy chocolate and coffee flavour, was created in 1988 - the same year the brewery was founded.

Two years later, Deschutes released Mirror Pond Pale Ale, a crisp and refreshing beer with a citrusy hop flavour and swirls of caramel malt. The classic American style pale ale quickly became one of the brewery’s best-selling beers, given its balanced and easy-to-drink nature.

In 2013, another one of Deschutes’ brews took the world by storm. The brewery released its Freshly Squeezed IPA and it became one of Deschutes’ flagship brews. The IPA has sweet hop aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit that perfectly complement its muffin-like malt base.

Deschutes’ love for its community and environment

Not gonna lie, we stan a environmentally-conscious and community-loving king. Deschutes Brewery has always been crafting for the community. As such, the brewery supports a variety of non-profit organisations that rally for diversity & inclusion, land & water conservation, hunger prevention, and youth services.

Deschutes’s core value, “the time for better is now”, also extends to brewing beer sustainably. Besides being a Green Power Partner and a member of the DOE Better Plants Program, the brewery also purchases renewable energy through the Blue Sky Program annually. Deschutes also focuses on conserving water, recycling and composting its waste, and sourcing its ingredients locally.

With the 2016 Sustainability Award in its bag, along with its famous, tasty beers, Deschutes is definitely a brewery that we can get behind. From its humble beginnings in 1988 to its current status as one of the largest craft breweries in the United States, Deschutes has never lost sight of its mission to produce high-quality, flavorful, and sustainable beers that beer lovers everywhere can enjoy.
