Founded over 200 years ago by Jean-Baptist Bosteels in 1791, Bosteels Brewery continued to be led by 7 generations of dedicated brewers in the Bosteels family. The brewery is a shining example of the historic brewing scene in Belgium, and also showcases the passion the family has for brewing its beers to perfection. Bosteels offers only four beers, Tripel Karmeliet, DeuS, Pauwel Kwak, and Monte Cristo, but each of these beers have their own fascinating backstory and striking flavour profile that keep discerning drinkers thirsty for more!

Bosteels was founded by Jean-Baptist Bosteels in Buggenhout, Belgium, in 1791, and his legacy will go on to inspire 6 generations of Bosteels - Jozef, Martin, Leon, Antoine Sr., Ivo, and Antoine - to dedicate their lives to master the demanding art of Belgian brewing.

In 1958, Antoine Bosteels Sr. passed away and his wife Adrienne had to step in and lead the brewery through difficult times until Ivo and his brothers were old enough to step up. Fast forward to the 60s, an increasing demand for pilsners stunted the growth of Belgian specialty beers. As a result, Bosteels had to rely on their pale ales and pilsners to survive, that is, until Ivo introduced the iconic beer - Kwak - back to the world of beer in the mid 80s.

Bosteels’ iconic brews

The Kwak was created to honour Pauwel Kwak, who was a brewer and the owner of the ‘De Hoorn’ Inn in Dendermonde at the time of Napoleon. Back then, coachmen who stopped at an inn were, unlike their passengers, not allowed to leave their coach and horses in order to quench their thirst. Feeling pity for the thirsty coachmen, Kwak invented a special glass that could be hung safely on a coach, so that every coachman who visited his inn could enjoy a glass of Kwak beer just like everybody else.

The strong Belgian amber ale has a perfect blend of malt and hops with a complex flavour of biscuit, banana, orange marmalade, and hints of caramel to balance its delicate bitterness. Ivo not only recreated Pauwel Kwak’s iconic glass design, but also expanded the Kwak range in 2022 to include the Kwak Blonde and the Kwak Rouge.

In 1993, Ivo’s son Antoine was eager to follow in his father’s footsteps, so he joined the company. Soon after, Antoine had the idea to create a Tripel, but not just any Tripel. Antoine was inspired by a local bakery’s multi-grained bread and worked tirelessly at creating a recipe for a 3-grain beer. At the end of the 20th century, Antoine discovered a historical 1679 recipe from the Karmelieten abbey in Dendermonde that was almost identical to the one he had been working on for the past 3 years.

Upon his discovery, Antoine continued to perfect and refine the unique recipe to craft a beer that could finally stand the test of time. And with that, the iconic 3-grain tripel was born, and it was named the Tripel Karmeliet to honour the abbey he derived the recipe from. The Tripel has hints of vanilla and citrus balanced with sweet, spicy, and earthy notes.

Upon its launch in 1996, the Tripel was an instant hit and went on to win the gold medal from the World Beer Cup! Besides its immense international recognition and prestige, the Tripel Karmeliet is also a modern classic in Belgium and far beyond.

Although Bosteels Brewery has been acquired by AB InBev, the brewery will still be run by the Bosteels family and will remain in its home location of Buggenhout, Belgium. The brewery will continue to follow its traditional brewing recipes and methods and ensure that the quality of its beers is preserved. Today, Bosteels Brewery is considered to be one of the best breweries in Belgium and we don’t see it falling off anytime soon!
