Belching Beaver Brewery, located in Vista, California, has made a significant mark on the craft beer scene since its inception in 2012. Founded by Thomas Vogel, Dave Mobley, and brewmaster Troy Smith, the brewery is committed to creating great brews while having a “Dam Good Time” doing it! Belching Beaver is renowned for its wacky brews that have distinct personalities, but it also offers traditional beers. After all, the brewery seeks to provide a selection that covers everyone’s palates!

In 2012, three beer lovers got together to build their dreams; that was the start of the Belching Beaver Brewery. Back then, Thomas was a long-time buyer for Sublime Ale House, which was also where he met Troy.

At Sublime, the two of them got to do collaboration brews with brewers that they really liked and at some point, Thomas asked Troy if he could intern at Sublime for free. After a while, the team at Sublime’s agreed to take Thomas under their wing and they started to train him on all aspects of commercial brewing.

Meanwhile, Thomas met Dave in a wine class. Dave had a hunch that Thomas was going to open a brewery so he asked if they could partner up, but this partnership didn’t go through until years later.

With a brewer and a partner, Thomas was finally ready to establish his own brewery and thus, Belching Beaver was born!

Belching Beaver’s brews

Belching Beaver Brewery is known to push the boundaries of beer styles. While they offer classic brews like IPAs, stouts, and pilsners, they are also known for their inventive and playful concoctions. The brewery’s flagship beer is the Peanut Butter Milk Stout - a rich, creamy stout infused with an intense, roasted nutty flavour. You may recognise the famous brew by its delicious nutty aroma or by its adorably iconic beaver holding a beer in one hand and a peanut in the other.

That’s right, Belching Beaver always has a fun time designing its labels and making sure that the designs properly represent their whimsical brand identity and playful style. After all, the brewery aims to create high-quality beers with quirky personalities!

Other notable creations of the brewery include the Me So Honey Blonde Ale, which incorporates local honey to create a sweet and balanced beer and features a beaver with honey all over its cute face.

Belching Beaver’s stance on beer

As with most niche things, there’s a part of beer culture that is starting to become very exclusive. Some beer lovers may start to gatekeep or even shame those who are not the most knowledgeable about craft beer. Belching Beaver seeks to counter that kind of attitude; it wants to create an inclusive space where everybody is welcome.

To Troy, that’s what beer is all about: friendly, approachable, and having a good time. As a result, Belching Beaver is not only committed to making great brews but also prides itself on creating a plethora of beers to hopefully suit everyone’s palates!
