Athletic Brewing Co, a pioneer in non-alcoholic craft beer, was founded in 2017 by Bill Shufelt and John Walker, who shared a passion for craft beer and an active lifestyle. Shufelt, a former hedge fund trader, was always a fan of craft beer but found alcohol detrimental to his hectic work life. One night, frustrated by the lack of tasty non-alcoholic options, he expressed his desire for readily available, delicious brews to his wife. This conversation sparked the idea that would lead to the creation of Athletic Brewing Co.

The Epic Adventure Behind Athletic Brewing

Brewing a Partnership

That was when Shufelt’s wife pointed out to him that his idea was indeed a great one. Shufelt decided to take a chance and provide people with a healthier alternative to beer that tasted just as good. He spent two years developing a concrete business plan, despite facing discouragement from many who believed the non-alcoholic beer market was too small.

However, Shufelt’s own research and meetings with retailers convinced him that there was a market for his idea. The only problem was that he had no experience brewing beer. Recognizing the need for a brewing partner, Shufelt attended conferences and posted on message boards, eventually finding the perfect match in John Walker, his co-founder.

From Homebrew to Brewery

Shufelt and Walker began their brewing journey at home, using Gatorade jugs and experimenting with different recipes. Their initial plans to contract brew at larger facilities were met with rejection, a blessing in disguise that led them to build their own brewery for complete control over their brews.

Thanks to Shufelt's persistent networking, Athletic secured a 7-day store trial at Whole Foods, which proved to be a game-changer. From the very first day, Athletic's brews sold out, leading to rapid expansion throughout New England and beyond.

To achieve this, the co-founders spent two years researching and experimenting to develop a new process for brewing top-quality non-alcoholic beers without compromising taste.

Today, Athletic Brewing Co offers a diverse range of delicious, multi-award-winning non-alcoholic beers, having clinched medals at prestigious competitions like the World Beer Awards, the Great American Beer Festival, the US Open Beer Championships, and more.

The Upside Dawn Golden Ale, released in 2018, is a clean, balanced, light-bodied ale crafted with premium Vienna malt and a combination of English and traditional American hops. This results in subtle floral and earthy notes. Run Wild IPA, another popular choice, has garnered multiple gold medals and rave reviews for its approachable bitterness and deliciously malty body. Brewed with 5 different Northwest hops, this IPA is a flavorful option with only 65 calories.
