Founded by six knights who became monks, the Abbey of Affligem has been brewing since 1074, using ancient recipes that were developed nearly 1000 years ago. Despite facing multiple destructions, Affligem remained unfazed and continued to churn out top-quality brews. With multiple awards under its belt, Affligem is now known to be one of the best breweries in Belgian!
It all started with 6 knights - former brothers in arms - who became monks in the village of Affligem in 1074. The monks lived by the rules of St. Benedict, which stressed the importance of community and hospitality. The monks started to brew beer for their guests as it was the safer drinking option as compared to water at the time and voila - Affligem Abbey was born.
Over the years, Affligem had to bear its fair share of bad luck. In 1129, a huge fire struck the abbey, then it was damaged again in the 14th century by the troops of the Count of Flanders and later totally destroyed by soldiers of William of Orange in 1580. However, each time disaster struck, Affligem refused to accept its ill-fated afflictions and simply rebuilt.
Like many other Belgian abbeys, Affligem met its temporary end in 1794 - where the invasion by the French Revolutionary forces took place. However, in 1870, monks returned to Affligem Abbey and started agricultural activities once again on the site. A decade later, a neo-gothic wing was added to the abbey and a new church was erected. The brewery was re-opened in 1885.
During the second World War, the brewery was once again destroyed but the monks did not falter. Instead, they found a solution and collaborated with the brewery of Opwijk - which was located near the abbey. The fateful collaboration resulted in a rework of the ancient beer recipe so as to fit modern techniques without compromising on quality and its signature taste.
Affligem - beers and brewing
Quality is vital for the brewing team at Affligem; they are devoted to conscientiously producing the best beer they can from the very first brewing step. Starting with exceptional quality ingredients, the barley that they use is naturally high in starch, which is what gives their beers its rounded quality. The brewers even check the quality of the malt by hand!
Next, Aflligem uses high-quality, single variety European hops like Savinsjki Golding and Spalter Select, which gives its beers a mildly bitter quality. The secret of Affligem actually lies in the yeast that is used; the brewery’s special house yeast is what gives all its beers a characteristic rich and smooth signature taste. Lastly, before the team bottles and draughts their beers, they will first do a taste test to ensure that every batch they brew is perfect.
The result of such a conscientious brewing process is award-winning beers that are beloved by beer fanatics around the world. With multiple medals and awards under its belt, Affligem’s Blond is the brewery’s flagship beer. The blond is a well-balanced, rich and smooth beer that has a mild hoppy bitterness underneath its soft fruitiness.
